We have netbackup media server (Windows Server 2003 SP2, Netbackup Client 6.5) which is backing up to a DataDomain 640 appliance (DD OS version 5.1.1). Our Netbackup environment is running on version 6.5. The backups were working before but it failed with these error message from admin console:

We open a support call for DataDomin but the EMC tech can't find anything wrong from DD level (credentials are correct and ddboost access allows the media server). We tried to readd the openstorage credentials using these two commands but it failed on the "-add" part:

tpconfig -delete -storage_server phldd01 -stype DataDomain -sts_user_id ostuser -password xxxx
tpconfig -add -storage_server phldd01 -stype DataDomain -sts_user_id ostuser -password xxxx --> *** IT FAILED HERE ***

The error we encounter when adding again the credentials are these:

We also tried to generate the "tpcommand" log under C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Volmgr\debug\tpcommand and try the "tpconfig -add" again. The last few lines from the log file are as follows:

The media server is online now.

Why does it in paused?

I have backup exec 12.5. Now I am downloading the 2012 version.

Ghost 11.5 creating multiple .GHS files

I need a solution

I'm trying to back up an image using Ghost 11.5 through WinPE.  When I back up the image to a local drive (such as an external hard drive), it creates one .GHO file as it should.

However, when I back up to a network share it creates a bunch of .GHS files exactly 2 GB each.  I read somewhere that Ghost does this because of a network limitation.

Is there any way around this?  I'd really like it to back up one file to my network share.  I'm not using a Ghostcast server.

Simple way to copy jobs from a new MMS *to* CAS?

Hi, my scenario is thus:

2x standalone 2015 servers (legacy VM estate(backup2) and new vm estate(Backup1) being backup up seperately)

Get old VM estate retired, buy CAS license, create CAS server, use backup2 as test platform as legacy estate gone.

Add backup2 to CAs, all jobs automatically appear, all resources appear, no worries.  So far so good.

Add backup1, no jobs appear, resources appear.  Running jobs on backup1 does not report in CAS(like backup1 is still stand alone).

How do I get all the jobs (which is literal, its *all* the jobs) from the MMS backup1 to the CAS so that the CAS can run and allocate the jobs?

Its around 150 jobs, theres a very small maintenance window and it seems to me doing it by hand can't be the only way.

I've tried BECLI and powershell but its a dead end, too many variables need tweaked (i.e. NIC names, Media Sets etc).

Surely there must be a simple way?

It also occurs to me that once we achieve this I can export all teh jobs into ps1 scripts for an extra layer of backup redundancy...

How do I verify a media?

Hi,

Is there a way to verify if it's possible to write on a media to see if it's damaged?

I bought 20 new media, did the Inventory and put the tapes in Scratch Media and i got this error during the backup:

drive_error">Storage device "IBM LTO4 Tape Drive" reported an error on a request to write data to media. Error reported: 0x17

I would like to verify the media one by one if possible.

We are receiving warning messages that say "This server has one or more virtual tape librariies that are configured to use multiple drives that are not licensed for unlimited drive support." Our server only has 1 VTL so I'm not sure why we are experiencing issues. The screenshot below shows the error, any advice on how to resolve this? Thank you.

Error-handling rules for missed jobs, BE2015

Hi all,

 I've had BE2015 for a little more than 2 months now, and almost all of the issues are ironed out, but one niggling problem remains:  I cannot create a functioning error-handling rule to address the 'missed job' e000e020 situation.  I have tried to do this through the 'Configuration and Settings > Error-Handing Rules', and also  by right-clicking on a Missed job in the Job Histories, and selecting 'Error Handling'.

 The rules exist, they just don't seem to work, and I can find no record that they tried to run and failed, or any other detail.  It's tricky to run the Debugger, because you never know when the missed job situation will actually arise, and if I let the Debugger run all weekend, I'll fill up the Applications volume with log files.

 There is only one other rule Enabled, "Recovered Jobs", which I believe was automatically created by BE - I certainly didn't create it. That does appear to run when jobs end up as 'Recovered', a situation that doesn't happen at all frequently.

 I had this rule set up in BE2010, and it worked perfectly.  It was very handy because with over 50 jobs and 150 servers a 'Missed' condition happens every weekend, and this simple rule would catch those and automatically re-run them w/o human intervention.  Now, I have to log in every weekend and re-run jobs.

 My system is:

   Win2008 R2 Std. - BE2015 (Ver 14.2 Rev. 1180, 64-bit) - no Antivirus - standalone physical server - up to date w/ patches and Hotfixes.

 Any thoughts on why this rule wouldn't run?

Hello,

I have received a notification from symantec that the upgrade for the backup exec appliance R2 and R3 to the new R4 is now available... anyone knows of any documentation or steps or notes about the how to perform the upgrade? the appliance currently uses windows server 2008 R2 and backup exec 2012. what will be upgraded exactly? the backup exec. version or both the OS and the backup exec.?

appreciate any input on this.

Encryption on UNIX machine

Hi,

We have veritas server 6.5.6 on windows server 2k8 enterprise.We take backups of both UNIX and windows boxes.

Backup is working fine.We have enabled encyption and set passphase for windows boxes.

The windows boxes backups are working fine with encryption.

Recently there is a requirement for enabling encryption in backup of UNIX servers.

I am doing below steps(same as i do it incase of windows machine) but getting error.

Backup Exec 2015 Remote Server License Question

Example Question: I have three Windows 2012 R2 servers – Server A (main server), Server B (remote server) & Server C (remote server). If Server A backs up itself (Server A) and the two remote servers (Server B & Server C), how many remote agent licenses do I need to purchase? Just one or two?

Backups network crunch

We have Backup Exec 2010 R3. Our server uses dedupe and the dedupe folder is on a network storage device. We also duplicate the backups to external USB drives which are connected to the network storage device. Obviously dedupe dehydrates the data to the dedupe folder, then rehydrates to send to USB over the network. The total storage data sent and space used on the USB drive is 2TB. The backup jobs take almost a week from start to finish.

I'd like to do backups directly to the network storage device, then duplicated to the USB. No deduplication. This should be able to relieve our network, and the jobs should run faster over our network.

Granular Exchange 2007 Restore and BE 15

Hi all.

We have a issue here, we can make backups without problems, our Exchange 2007 server has 3 databases and there's no problem do make backups. But, we can not make granular restores, when we start a new task to restore a user mailbox or other item BE doesn't show nothing, no users, folders or items.

We appreciate if someone help us.

Failure adding Exchange 2010 DAG to Backup Exec

We are running Backup Exec 15 on Windows Server 2012 R2. I have setup backups for Active Directory, SharePoint, SQL, VMware virtual machines, and our FIleserver. When attempting to add our Exchange DAG to Backup Exec, the process fails trying to add the DAG to the server list. The agents install fine and everything looks like it is working.

When I click Finish after the agents are installed, it displays Inserting server... and then fails with the below error:

The server was unable to complete the requested operation.

A communication failure occurred when attempting to connect to this server. Some common causes for this error are: the computer name is typed incorrectly, the computer is not powered on, a Backup Exec agent is not installed, or the network is improperly configured.

I have tried rebooting the Exchange servers and the Backup Exec server, reinstalling the agents, and removing and installing the agents fresh.
